Match Preview: Swinburne FC v Doncaster Rovers

Thomas Burchsmith

Swinburne FC will face Doncaster Rovers in the next round of the Australia Cup.

It’s a classic David vs. Goliath battle—Swinburne FC, a Sunday League side battling the elements on a home ground with a cricket pitch and covered in mud, against a well-run club competing at a far higher level.

But this isn’t the first time Swinburne has punched above its weight.

Who could forget our famous 2023 victory over State League 4 outfit Lyndale United, a result that sent shockwaves through the football world?

But the biggest challenge facing The Burners right now isn’t on the pitch—it’s getting the squad registered.

With only three players signed up so far, the team in red and white stripes wouldn’t stand much chance in a 3 v 11 matchup.

Committee member Nathan Gorga was thrilled with excitement at the prospect in playing in front of a huge crowd.

“Away Day at Doncaster Rovers! Expecting a huge crowd in attendance to cheer on the lads” Gorga said.

The match will take place on Monday the 3rd of March at 7:30pm at Anderson Park.
